Interactive Confidence
by Michael Grimm

This isn’t really a strategy gaming story, but it’s funny, nonetheless.

I had an interesting conversation with my son the other day while he was playing Hulk: Ultimate Destruction for the Xbox. I looked up from my reading to notice that he was picking up civilians, marching over to the water and powering up a throw and tossing them a mile into the bay.

“Err…Why are you throwing people into the water?” I asked.

“They want to swim.” He replied innocently.

“So the screaming is just like an act? You’re big and green, you know.”

“They want to swim, they told me.”

Now right here I was thinking that I’d never heard about this feature of the game: interactive confidence, where the NPC’s tell you what they really want to be doing. Meanwhile he was nabbing up more things to toss in the river after the people, including cars and one bus. My wife was frowning at me during all of this. As if I was somehow the cause of it all. She does that.

“So you’re just tossing them in so they can go swimming?”

“Yes.”

“And…let me guess, the cars and busses are being tossed in after them in case they need a ride?”

“Yes.”

“Carry on.”

This brought more glares from the wife. You just can’t seem to please women.
